Whilst Manchester United’s defence has often looked solid this season, the Reds’ back four remains a patched up one that still looks shaky on too many occasions.
Although Chris Smalling looks capable of being a part of United’s back four for years to come, the same can’t be said of the club’s other central defenders.
Daley Blind has filled in well in the role this season but it remains an unnatural position for him, Marcos Rojo is extremely error prone and Phil Jones’ injury record makes him difficult to rely on in the future.
There are some decent prospects at the club that could fulfil the role in the coming years, but even with the likes of Paddy McNair and Timothy Fosu-Mensah coming through, the Reds are still in need of defensive reinforcements.
United needed to sign a central defender last year but didn’t after their pursuit of Sergio Ramos failed, and that’s a mistake they can’t afford to repeat this year.
