Carrick offered one-year extension

Michael Carrick has been offered a one-year extension to his current contract by Manchester United, with the 34-year-old now deciding over whether to extend his stay at Old Trafford.

Carrick, who joined United from Tottenham back in 2006 for £14 million, had been linked with a move away from the Theatre of Dreams with his contract expiring in June and all signs pointed to the veteran midfielder leaving after he brought out his kids as mascots for United’s final Premier League game of the season against Bournemouth earlier this month.

However, the arrival of José Mourinho has seemingly changed the situation, with The Guardian reporting that the 34-year-old has been assured by the Portuguese manager that he will have a role to play at United next season and he is now mulling over the extension offered to him.

Carrick was at Monaco watching Formula One action at the weekend, and he spoke glowingly of Mourinho:

Mourinho’s track record speaks for itself. He’s a good fit for the club and hopefully he’ll do very well.

I have to say it’s sad to see anyone lose their job, the manager [Louis van Gaal] and staff, but good times are ahead.

It would be a good move for United to retain Carrick – even with his advancing age, he still has the quality to play for the Reds, but in a reduced squad role and not week in, week out. Plus, his experience will be vital for a United side still going through a rebuilding phase.
