# United want Mourinho dynasty

Manchester United want new manager Jose Mourinho to stay beyond the three-year contract he signed just last week, [according to the Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2016/jun/02/manchester-united-jose-mourinho-stay-three-year-contract).

Mourinho’s longest managerial stay at one club was with Chelsea during his first spell in charge, which lasted just over three years.

However, both he and United’s chief executive Ed Woodward appear intent on a long association between the Portuguese and the club, with Mourinho indicating his desire to stay for the long-term last week.

United are understood to believe that Mourinho can fulfil his three-year deal at Old Trafford and provide the club with long-term success.

The Portuguese’s United contract includes an option for an additional fourth season in charge, despite both his and the Reds’ recent managerial records.

United have cut short the contracts of both of their previous two bosses, as David Moyes was disposed of ten months into his six-year deal in 2014 before Louis van Gaal was sacked two years into his three-year deal.

Likewise, Mourinho was sacked by Real Madrid after three years in charge in 2013 and had his second stint with Chelsea cut short two and a half years into the role – just four months after signing a new four-year contract.

That second spell at Chelsea did show signs of Mourinho wanting to settle into a role, though. Speaking only months after his re-appointment as manager of the Stamford Bridge outfit, the Portuguese said:

> *I would like \[to stay for\], say, 12 years. The best way is to do it with stability. For the players, if you want to help them grow up, you do that much better with stability: in ideas, philosophy, model of play, style of leadership.*

United fans would surely have no qualms about Mourinho staying on as boss if he can replicate the success he has had with other clubs in his first few campaigns in charge at Old Trafford.

However, in order to do that, Mourinho might have to adjust his style as a manager slightly. Only time will tell if he is willing to do that.
