The history of United’s record transfer fee – The early days

It’s no secret – Manchester United have smashed not only their record transfer fee, but also the world record transfer fee, in signing French powerhouse Paul Pogba from Juventus.

The Serie A champions put up a stern front and made negotiations long and arduous, but not for the first time this summer Ed Woodward prevailed in landing his target.

So what does the path to Pogba look like in United’s history books? Roy Keane was the first man from outside of the United Kingdom to break United’s record fee paid to another club – and Dwight Yorke was the first man from another continent to hold the record upon arrival at Old Trafford.

Down the years, United have signed some mightily good players as their transfer record has been broken over 30 times – but this week comes the biggest of them all, as for the first time ever, the record fee paid by United has eclipsed the £80 million received from Real Madrid for Cristiano Ronaldo.

Here are the first ten transfers to break United’s existing record fee paid – this article is part of a series detailing the entire path from £0 to £89 million!
