# Blackett completes Reading move

Tyler Blackett has completed a move from Manchester United to Reading.

The 22-year-old defender, who is capable of playing in both the left-back and centre-back positions, has [signed a three year deal](https://www.readingfc.co.uk/news/article/2016-17/tyler-blackett-joins-reading-from-manchester-united-3265213.aspx) at the Madejski Stadium.

Having showed a lot of promise in United’s under-21 side, Blackett was given his first-team shot by Louis van Gaal – but following the emergence of Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, it was clear that young Tyler was simply not going to challenge for a starting place at Manchester United.

A loan move to Celtic went very badly for Blackett as the defender was stuck playing for their under-21 side following some poor performances for the first-team; Bhoys fans bemoaned his abilities and were glad to see him return to Old Trafford.

Blackett will now have a very good mentor in the Championship – Reading are managed by ex-United man and centre-back extraordinaire, Jaap Stam. The Dutchman was a fan favourite during his time at Old Trafford and working under him will certainly do good for Blackett’s career.

Stam said of Blackett’s signing:

> “As we know, Tyler is a talented defender who has played for United’s first team. He can play as a left-back or a left-sided centre-back; he has got great potential in the sense that he is quick and athletic, defensively he is strong and he is good at set-pieces. As a defender he can go and play high up the pitch as well, and that is what we need in the squad.”

The Englishman, who is also eligible to play for Barbados or Jamaica internationally, will wear the number 24 at his new club.
