# Should Manchester United target FA Cup glory again?

Manchester United have endured a difficult week in which not only have back-to- back defeats resulted in a loss of momentum in the Premier League, but also seen the Europa League campaign get off to the worst possible start. Critics have weighed in with their own opinions as to [whether the club are in crisis](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/manchester-united-crisis-5-things-8870291), but while it should be remembered that the 2016/2017 league season is just five games old, Jose Mourinho may value Manchester United’s defence of the FA Cup as a priority.

The ‘Special One’ stated that he wanted to bring trophies and success back to Old Trafford by winning everything, and although only five clubs have managed to win back-to- back FA Cup in the competition’s history, the fans would certainly welcome a repeat of last season’s triumph at Wembley in the most prestigious domestic tournament in world football.

Lifting the cup was undoubtedly the highlight of Louis Van Gaal’s managerial reign, but with Mourinho stepping into the hotseat and bringing a host of big name players to Old Trafford, there is no reason why the team cannot target both domestic competitions, along with mounting a serious title challenge in the Premier League and the Europa League. The squad is certainly big enough and good enough to compete on all fronts this season, and although the latest FA Cup betting odds with Coral put Manchester United firmly in contention to triumph again, Mourinho will have to get the players firing on all cylinders again.

[Beating a plucky Northampton side 3-1 in the EFL Cup](https://readmanutd.com/2016/09/21/player-ratings-northampton-town-1-2-manchester-united/) thanks to goals from Michael Carrick, Ander Herrera and Marcus Rashford may provide the confidence boost needed to lift Manchester United and end any talk of a crisis.

Three home games on the bounce may also help Mourinho to get fans who may have started to doubt his appointment onside again, with Old Trafford likely to be packed for the upcoming fixtures against defending champions Leicester on Saturday’s early kick-off, Zorya in the Europa League next Thursday and Stoke the following Sunday.

Being drawn against rivals Manchester City in the EFL Cup 4th Round certainly gives the Red Devils a chance of sweet revenge after the 2-1 league defeat, and although United will have to wait until late December to see if they are handed a [mismatched](https://news.coral.co.uk/football/premier-league/man-utd-next-season-specials-can-red-devils-build-on-fa-cup-success_148620.html) tie against a non-league side who are living the FA Cup dream by reaching the illustrious 3rd Round, Coral certainly believe that Mourinho’s side have the quality and firepower to be one of the teams to beat this season.

Some would argue that Manchester United were fortunate to get a favourable run to the Final, having beaten Sheffield United, Derby, Shrewsbury, West Ham, and Everton before beating Crystal Palace 2-1 at Wembley, the team can only beat what is put in front of them.

The FA Cup may not be at the forefront of Mourinho’s mind as he tries to lift the players after a turbulent week which has seen three straight defeats derail what was an excellent start to the new campaign, but a man who lifted the cup back in 2007 with Chelsea knows what it takes to win trophies.
