Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has dismissed suggestions that he will leave the club for China next week, stating that he will remain at Old Trafford.
In a statement posted on the official Manchester United website, the skipper said:
Despite the interest which has been shown from other clubs, for which I’m grateful, I want to end recent speculation and say that I am staying at Manchester United.
I hope I will play a full part in helping the team in its fight for success on four fronts.
It’s an exciting time at the club and I want to remain a part of it.
Rooney’s agent, Paul Stretford, had reportedly been in China this week to negotiate a possible transfer for his client, but this statement suggests that any move to the Far East has been put off until the summer transfer window.
Rooney had recently become United’s all-time record goalscorer, surpassing Sir Bobby Charlton’s record with a free-kick against Stoke City in late January, but has played a bit-part role under José Mourinho this season.
He has made 18 appearances for the Reds this season and scored five goals in all competitions, although only 11 of those have been starts.
