# Report: Manchester United 3-2 Southampton – EFL Cup Final

A Zlatan Ibrahimovic brace and a Jesse Lingard strike secured Manchester United their first major trophy under Jose Mourinho at Wembley Stadium.

Southampton started the better of both sides in the opening half, with the Saints having a goal disallowed in the 10th minute of the game.

United opened the scoring in the 19th minute. Zlatan Ibrahimovic drilled in a free-kick from 25-yards out, giving United the lead.

Manchester United furthered their lead just before the half-time whistle, with Jesse Lingard hitting low and hard in the bottom right-hand corner to put Manchester United 2-0 up.

Southampton came out stronger in the second-half. January signing Gabbiadini close range shot finish gave Southampton a life-line.

And before United could further their lead, Southampton forward Gabbiadini equalised the scoring with a superb effort into the bottom right corner on the turn from 15-yards out.

However, in the 86th minute, Zlatan Ibrahimovic headed Manchester United to their first trophy since their FA Cup win in 2016.
