# United finalise Lindelof signing

Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Benfica defender Victor Lindelöf after the 22-year-old Swedish international passed his medical at Carrington this afternoon:

Lindelöf has signed a four-year deal, with an option for an extra year at Old Trafford if he chooses to remain further. The fee has been revealed by Benfica to be €35 million, with another €10 million on further clauses.

The Swedish international becomes José Mourinho’s first signing of the summer as the Reds bolster their squad ahead of their return to the Champions League this season. Lindelöf will be expected to make his United debut during the summer tour of the United States in July.

After signing his contract, Lindelöf had this to say to the official club website:

> *I am thrilled to be joining Manchester United. I have enjoyed my time at Benfica enormously and I have learned a lot there. But I’m looking forward to playing in the Premier League at Old Trafford and for Jose Mourinho. I’m keen to get started and make my contribution to the team’s efforts to win more trophies.*

Mourinho also had his say on his new recruit:

> *Victor is a very talented young player, who has a great future ahead of him at United. Our season last year showed us that we need options and quality to add depth to the squad and Victor is the first to join us this summer. I know that our fantastic group of players will welcome him as one of us.*

Lindelöf joins United with a burgeoning reputation, as he cemented his standing as one of the finest defenders playing in Portuguese football by claiming his third Liga NOS title with Benfica. Having broken his way into the Eagles side following an injury crisis in the second half of the 2015-16 season, he has been an integral part of Rui Vitória’s side as they secured a fourth successive Portuguese league title.

He has also become a regular at international level for Sweden, earning twelve caps so far and playing for his country at Euro 2016 – starting all three group games in France last summer. At Under-21 level, he has also lifted the European Championship, slotting home the winning penalty against Portugal in the summer of 2015.
