# Zlatan Ibrahimovic signs new one-year deal with Man United

Manchester United have [announced](https://www.manutd.com/en/News-And-Features/Football-News/2017/Aug/zlatan-ibrahimovic-to-wear-the-number-10-shirt-for-manchester-as-he-signs-new-deal.aspx) that Zlatan Ibrahimovic has signed a new one-year deal with the club.

He will wear the number ten shirt, which was vacated by former captain Wayne Rooney when he departed for Everton this summer.

The 35-year-old made 46 appearances and scored 28 goals for the Reds last season, as they lifted the Community Shield, EFL Cup and Europa League. However, Ibrahimovic’s season came to a premature end in April, after he suffered serious knee ligament damage in the Europa League quarter-final against Anderlecht.

Since then, he has made a remarkable recovery and instead of signing his new contract in January, as previously reported, he has pushed it forward and could well make his United return as early as October.

In a statement, Ibrahimovic said that his intention was always to stay at Old Trafford for another season:

> *I am back to finish what I started. It was always mine and the club’s intention for me to stay. I cannot wait to get back out on that Old Trafford pitch, but I also know that I have to take my time to make sure that I am ready. I have been working hard and will continue to do so to make sure I am in the best possible condition for my return to the pitch.*

United manager José Mourinho said that Ibrahimovic deserved the club’s trust after his contribution last season, and had no doubts that he would play an important part in the second half of the season:

> *We are delighted Zlatan is on the road to recovery and we are equally delighted to have his ambition and experience back with us. After his contribution last season he deserves our trust and we will be patient waiting for him to return. I have no doubt that he will be important in the second part of the season.*

After the Reds’ positive start to the Premier League season, Ibrahimovic will be hoping to add to his trophy cabinet, having won league titles in four different countries since beginning his career with Malmo all the way back in 1999.
