# Fellaini out until New Year with knee problem

Marouane Fellaini has added to Manchester United’s problems in midfield, with the Belgian midfielder being ruled out until the New Year with a recurring knee injury, according to [The Telegraph](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2017/12/16/manchester-united-hit-double-injury-blow-asmarouane-fellaini/).

Fellaini has already been missing for the past three weeks with the knee problem and the United medical staff have now decided that the 30-year-old needs an extended period of rehabilitation to make a full recovery.

The midfielder, who has played a key role in United’s season so far, initially suffered the problem on international duty with Belgium in October and was taken off in a World Cup qualifier against Bosnia and Herzegovina after damaging his medial collateral ligament.

Fellaini returned for the Reds against Chelsea at the start of November, but the injury had not fully healed and the Belgian played through the pain barrier in the games against Newcastle, Basel and Brighton later that month, aggravating the problem.

He has since missed the next five games for United and is now set to miss the entire festive programme, which leaves José Mourinho with only three fit central midfielders to choose from for the Premier League fixture with West Brom on Sunday: Nemanja Matic, Ander Herrera and Scott McTominay.

This is the second major injury blow that the Reds have received in recent days, with Eric Bailly being ruled out for up to three months with an ankle problem on Friday.
