Manchester United are readying a summer offer for Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti, according to Spanish sources.
The France international has frequently been linked with a move to United over the last few months, with manager Jose Mourinho said to be a big fan of the 24-year old.
Now Spanish outlet Don Balon are claiming that the Red Devils are prepared to pay the centre-back’s release clause of £53million when the transfer window re-opens.
Umtiti’s current deal with the Catalan club runs until 2021, but talks are currently underway to extend his deal beyond then.
Don Balon adds that Mourinho is confident of landing Umtiti this summer, with the club ready to spend big at the end of the season. Earlier this week, Mourinho said;
I think in attack it’s very difficult for us to improve. Where are we going to get a better combination of players than we have?
We cannot buy Messi, we cannot buy Cristiano. These are the best players of the last decade. Where can we get better players than [Juan] Mata, [Anthony] Martial, [Jesse] Lingard, [Marcus] Rashford, [Alexis] Sanchez, [Romelu] Lukaku? So, in attack, we have an amazing group of players.
In midfield Michael Carrick will be not the No.16 [next season]. Who will have Michael Carrick in his shirt next season, so we lose a player. It’s there in midfield where we need to improve but to get a player to compensate the situation of Michael.
If Fellaini leaves we have two gaps there so let’s see what happens. But in relation to Fellaini the good thing is he wants to stay with us and we would like him to stay with us. To sign a contract the person must be happy and let’s see.
