Jose Mourinho is keen to rival Liverpool in signing Napoli midfielder Jorginho and will try to tempt the club with an initial offer of £50million, according to a Daily Star exclusive.
With both Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini leaving this summer, Manchester United are in need of a new enforcer type to bolster out their squad.
With Emre Can seemingly set on joining Juventus, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was considered to be in pole position to sign Jorginho as the German’s replacement.
But it now understood that Mourinho is keen on the 26-year old, and is poised to go head-to-head with the Reds’ for the player.
Mourinho has reportedly already sent scouts to watch the Brazilian-born Italy international this season, including fixtures in the Champions League against Manchester City.
Jorginho joined Napoli from Hellas Verona in 2014 and has gone from strength to strength, becoming one of the most coveted defensive midfielders in the Italian Serie A.
He also played a part in transforming Napoli into Scudetto contenders, with Napoli now competing tooth and nail for the title with perennial champions Juventus, currently leading at the top of the table ahead of the Bianconeri.
Mourinho sees Jorginho as the perfect player to improve United’s squad balance, and he would also allow Paul Pogba to play with more freedom as an attacking player.
Mourinho also knows that United have the ability to offer more money in the way of both wages and transfer fees for the midfielder.
