# United set to launch huge summer bid for former star

Manchester United are preparing a huge summer offer for former player and world superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, according to Spanish sources.

United were heavily linked with the Real Madrid star in January, with the Portuguese forward having struggled for form this season in La Liga.

Madrid sit in third place in the league table and are almost certain to lose their crown to Barcelona, while the club also crashed out of the Copa del Rey in the quarter-finals.

While Ronaldo has repeatedly stated that he plans on retiring in the Spanish capital, he has also previously mentioned that he would like to return to United before he hangs up his boots.

Now Spanish outlet [El Gol Digital claim](https://www.elgoldigital.com/anthony-martial-presenta-candidatura-la-ganga-del-verano-tras-ultimo-desplante-del-manchester-united/) that United will come back in for the player in the summer, and will offer £178million for him.

The report also claims that the Red Devils would be willing to sell Anthony Martial to part-finance the deal, which would make Ronaldo the second most expensive player in world football, behind former La Liga rival Neymar.

Juventus are one of the clubs that have been linked with a move for Martial in recent times, with the Frenchman currently behind Alexis Sanchez, Marcus Rashford and Romelu Lukaku in the United pecking order.

El Gol Digital also claim that Ronaldo wants to retire with the club that launched him as a superstar.

Zinedine Zidane could be happy to sanction the deal, with Madrid expected to go through a massive shake-up summer, and he could even try to use David de Gea as a bargaining chip.
