Lingard scores first England goal against Netherlands

Jesse Lingard got off the mark for England against the Netherlands tonight in Amsterdam as he continues to shine this season.

The 25-year old attacking midfielder has enjoyed his most successful season of his career to date this campaign, scoring 13 goals in 41 appearances for Manchester United in all competitions.

It has appeared for a while now that Lingard was a certain inclusion in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the World Cup in Russia this summer, and tonight’s performance only helped consolidate that.

Lingard set up the initial cross, sliding the ball out to Danny Rose on the left from just outside the box. Rose’s low, bobbling cross was cleared as far as Lingard on the edge of the area, who then curled it past Jeroen Zoet into the bottom corner to take the second half 1-0 lead.

Given the less than impressive performances of Dele Alli for Tottenham this season, Lingard will be hoping he has done enough to have earned a starting berth for the Three Lions’ opening game at the World Cup against Tunisia.
