Manchester United succumbed to a 1-0 home defeat against West Brom on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Devils were clear favourites heading into the clash but were unable to break down a resilient West Brom defence on the day.
United struggled to create many openings and were often pegged back by West Brom’s counter-attacking prowess. The visitors’ resistance paid off, with Jay Rodriguez netting the winner in the 73rd minute.
The result means that United are mathematically unable to finish at the top of the Premier League table this season, meaning Manchester City have clinched the 2017/18 title.
From what was an embarrassing afternoon for Jose Mourinho’s men, here are our player ratings.
David de Gea - 6
Had a quiet game but made a good save to deny Jake Livermore.
Antonio Valencia - 5
Always an attacking outlet but contributed with some horrendous crosses.
Chris Smalling - 6
Coped well enough with West Brom’s balls over the top to Salomon Rondon.
Victor Lindelof - 5
A pretty average display. He was generally anonymous.
Ashley Young - 6
Worked hard and was an attacking outlet but saw little of the ball. He was unable to influence the match.
Nemanja Matic - 5
He didn’t take control of the middle and wasn’t noticeable at all.
Ander Herrera - 4
It was no surprise to see Herrera hooked at half-time. He was very poor.
Paul Pogba - 4
Pogba’s pass selection was poor and he didn’t have a good game. A stark contrast from his second-half display at City.
Juan Mata - 5
After a promising start in the opening exchanges, his influence began to falter and he was largely ineffectual.
Alexis Sanchez - 4
His work rate isn’t the problem but he just continues to underwhelm. He had no influence on the match and Sanchez certainly frustrated many with his misuse of possession.
Romelu Lukaku - 4
Missed a golden chance and barely offered United an outlet up front.
Substitutes
Jesse Lingard – 5: Energetic but largely wasteful.
