Manchester United are willing to splash the cash to sign Toby Alderweireld from Tottenham Hotspur this summer, according to the Evening Standard.
The Red Devils are understood to be leading the race to sign the Belgian international, who appears to be set for an exit from Spurs this summer as disagreements continue over his wages at the North London club.
It’s claimed that United are prepared to spend up to £40 million on Alderweireld, with the former Atletico Madrid defender emerging as a top target for Jose Mourinho.
United want to bolster their defensive reinforcements ahead of next season and Alderweireld is seemingly heading their list of potential recruits.
Spurs appear to be lining up replacements for Alderweireld already, too, indicating that his exit may not be far away. Mauricio Pochettino’s side want to land promising Ajax centre-back Matthijs de Ligt, as per the report from the Evening Standard.
United have an abundance of central defenders but it seems Mourinho is desperate to add a world-class option to the ranks and Alderweireld could be the man to provide that ahead of next season.
