Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made it eight wins out of eight as the manager of Manchester United, with his side winning 3-1 against Arsenal in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
United put on a clinical performance and opened the scoring with a searing counter attack. Romelu Lukaku set up former Arsenal man Alexis Sanchez with a delicious through ball and the Chilean did the rest by taking the ball past Petr Cech and squeezing his shot into the far corner.
The visitors doubled their lead just two minutes later through Jesse Lingard. Yet again, United broke with speed and Lukaku set up the World Cup star who took a calm touch and placed the ball past the Arsenal goalkeeper.
The Gunners halved the deficit through Alexandre Lacazette and came at United in the second half, but Solskjaer’s team stayed resolute and ended the game as a contest in the 82nd minute when Paul Pogba drove through the Arsenal midfield and took a shot that was parried to the onrushing Anthony Martial, who finished into an empty net.
Here’s how we rated the Manchester United players in the game.
Sergio Romero - 8
People have probably how crucial his fingertip save was to keep the score at 2-1 at the beginning of the second half. His kicking may leave a lot to be desired at times but that save was outstanding.
Ashley Young - 6
Mixed performance from United’s captain. He struggled with Iwobi and the overlapping runs from Kolasinac in the first half. It was clear that Arsenal were targeting the 33-year-old. Yet, Young dug in and was untroubled in the second half.
Eric Bailly - 7
Bailly was dominant in the air and on the floor as he won 100% of his tackles and aerial duels. The Ivorian coped well with the threat of Lacazette and Aubameyang. Should have done better for Arsenal goal, though, and was slow to come across.
Victor Lindelof -8
The ‘ice man’ was superb once again. Lindelof has improved ten fold in the past couple of months. He has developed into a strong, commanding and intelligent centre-back for United.
Luke Shaw -8
Back in the team after illness saw him miss out against Brighton, Shaw was brilliant defensively. Was in the correct position and never looked in danger when tested one on one. He also set up United’s second, turning past Ramsey and playing an exquisite pass to Lukaku with the outside of his foot.
Nemanja Matic - 6
Another calm and disciplined performance from Matic. He is a player reborn under Solskjaer and never looked off the pace like he did under Mourinho.
Ander Herrera - 8
Once again, Herrera did his job to perfection. He covered nearly every blade of grass with his tireless running and pressing. He is a player completely transformed under the new manager.
Paul Pogba - 7
Pogba was not at his wondrous best at the Emirates but still demonstrated some of his undeniable class in the second half. His driving runs caused havoc and he was central to the third goal that sealed victory.
Romelu Lukaku - 8.5
The Belgian has been ridiculed for some of his below-par performances but Lukaku was given man-of-the-match for an excellent display as he set up two goals.
Jesse Lingard - 8
Lingard played the false nine role to perfection. Always wanting the ball and making the right movements, the diminutive attacker finished well to put United 2-0 up.
Alexis Sanchez - 8
It had to be him. The once fan-favourite at Arsenal opened the scoring in his return to the Emirates with a wonderful finish. He was booed all game but was desperate to haunt his old side and did just that
Marcus Rashford - 6
(72nd minute) Rashford came on but had little impact.
Anthony Martial - 7
The Frenchman kept pace with Pogba and put the rebound into the net to finish the tie.
