# Michael Carrick singles out Jack Fletcher after Man Utd penalty win

**Michael Carrick has singled out Jack Fletcher for praise after the Manchester United youngster impressed during Wednesday night’s penalty shootout victory over Leeds United.**

Fletcher was introduced during the second half at Croke Park before stepping forward to take one of United’s penalties following the 1-1 draw.

The 19-year-old converted confidently as Carrick’s side eventually secured a 5-4 shootout victory.

## Michael Carrick praises Jack Fletcher after Man Utd win

Speaking to [Manchester United’s official website](https://www.manutd.com/en/news/carrick-singles-out-one-penalty-taker), Carrick highlighted Fletcher’s willingness to take responsibility under pressure.

> “I was really encouraged by a lot of things but Jack stepping up to take the penalty, having the confidence to do that.”

Carrick added that moments like those form an important part of the development process for United’s younger players.

Fletcher replaced his twin brother Tyler during the second half after Carrick once again handed significant minutes to academy players.

His latest contribution continues an encouraging pre-season. Fletcher also created Bryan Mbeumo’s winner against Atletico Madrid earlier this month after winning possession high up the pitch.

Praise for the midfielder has not only come from Carrick.

[ReadManUtd reported earlier this week](https://readmanutd.com/2026/08/11/noussair-mazraoui-names-three-man-utd-youngsters-who-have-impressed-him/) that Noussair Mazraoui named Jack and Tyler Fletcher alongside Shea Lacey when discussing the academy players who have impressed him during pre-season.

Competition for senior midfield minutes will become much tougher as United’s international players regain full fitness, but Fletcher continues to make the most of his opportunities.

Taking responsibility in a penalty shootout against Leeds provided another small indication of why Carrick continues to keep him around the first-team squad.
