Man Utd predicted XI vs Hull as Rashford forces Carrick call

Manchester United’s predicted XI against Hull City has changed significantly since Michael Carrick delivered his final team-news update ahead of Saturday’s Premier League opener.

Benjamin Sesko has returned to training and could make the squad at the MKM Stadium, while Matthijs de Ligt has been ruled out and Mason Mount remains touch-and-go.

That creates several decisions for Carrick before the 12:30pm BST kick-off, particularly at centre-back and centre-forward.

ReadManUtd previously reported that Sesko and De Ligt had returned to team training during the build-up to Hull, but Carrick has now provided much greater clarity over who is actually ready to play.

Man Utd predicted XI vs Hull changes after Sesko return

Senne Lammens remains the clear choice in goal.

Carrick has confirmed Karl Darlow is back training and in good shape, but the summer signing is expected to provide cover rather than immediately displace United’s established No.1.

Diogo Dalot should start at right-back, with Luke Shaw on the opposite side.

The central-defensive selection is considerably less certain.

De Ligt will not be involved despite returning to training, while Lisandro Martinez has had limited preparation. Harry Maguire therefore looks the safest starter.

Ayden Heaven gets our final defensive place.

The youngster has been heavily involved during pre-season and offers greater match sharpness than Martinez heading into the opening weekend. Leny Yoro remains a strong alternative, but Heaven has done enough to make this a genuine selection battle.

United also know Hull could present a difficult opening-day challenge despite their status as a newly promoted side. ReadManUtd has already examined how Hull’s extensive summer rebuild gives Carrick a very different opponent from the one promoted from the Championship.

Sesko decision should keep Mbeumo through the middle

Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans remain the most likely midfield pairing.

Mount’s fitness uncertainty makes a start difficult to predict, while Manuel Ugarte remains sidelined. Santos and Tielemans also started together during the closing stages of United’s pre-season programme and give Carrick a balance of energy and control.

Bruno Fernandes should operate as the No.10.

Further forward, Sesko’s return creates the biggest talking point.

Carrick has said he is looking forward to getting the striker some minutes, but starting him after an entire pre-season without match action would represent an unnecessary gamble.

Bryan Mbeumo should therefore continue through the middle.

Amad deserves to start from the right, while Matheus Cunha gets the nod on the left after having considerably more preparation time under Carrick than the returning Marcus Rashford.

Rashford remains a dangerous option from the bench. Carrick has praised how strongly he has returned and confirmed the England international can also operate centrally.

Sesko’s availability gives United another attacking option if the game requires one, but the sensible approach is to introduce him gradually rather than immediately asking him to lead the line.

Predicted Man Utd XI vs Hull

Lammens; Dalot, Maguire, Heaven, Shaw; Santos, Tielemans; Amad, Fernandes, Cunha; Mbeumo.

Sesko, Rashford and potentially Mount would give Carrick considerable attacking flexibility from the bench.

For the first time in several weeks, the question surrounding Sesko is no longer when he will return to training. It is how quickly Carrick is prepared to put him back on the pitch.
