# Wayne Rooney tells Manchester United to make four more signings

**Wayne Rooney believes Manchester United still have plenty of work to do before the transfer window closes, with the club legend calling for four more additions to Michael Carrick’s squad.**

United have already brought in Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Karl Darlow this summer. Rooney, however, thinks another left-back, centre-back, midfielder and striker are still needed.

The former United captain was speaking after the Reds ended pre-season with a 4-2 defeat to AC Milan.

## Wayne Rooney wants competition for Luke Shaw

Left-back is one of the areas Rooney wants United to address.

He believes Luke Shaw had a strong campaign last season but doesn’t think the club can afford to rely on him throughout another demanding season.

“I thought Luke Shaw had a really good season last season, but he didn’t have the best game against AC Milan. So I don’t think you can rely on Luke Shaw to be consistent for the whole season,” [Rooney said on the first episode of Stick to United from The Overlap.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JWsRIkp2c8)

Rooney then brought up Arsenal youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly, who has been linked with United this summer.

“That leads me to Lewis-Skelly, and we’re hearing that he’s available for not much money. I think it’s an absolute no-brainer.”

The teenager’s versatility is another reason Rooney likes the idea of bringing him to Old Trafford.

“If you can get a player who can play left-back, he can play centre midfield. He’s young, he’s got a massive future ahead of him. I think it’s an absolute no-brainer if you can bring him in.”

For Rooney, Lewis-Skelly could address more than one area of the squad.

## Three more positions need strengthening

Left-back isn’t the only position United should improve, according to Rooney.

The former striker believes Carrick also needs another centre-back, another central midfielder and an additional forward before the window shuts.

“I’d like to see another centre-back, I’d like to see another central midfield player and another centre forward.”

Manchester United return to Premier League action against newly promoted Hull City, leaving Carrick and the recruitment team limited time to make further changes.

Rooney’s comments also come after United’s final pre-season outing [exposed some of the concerns he has highlighted](https://readmanutd.com/2026/08/16/man-utd-five-lessons-ac-milan-defeat/). The 4-2 loss to AC Milan showed that there are still areas where the squad could use more depth.

Still, Rooney isn’t simply asking Manchester United to sign four players for the sake of it. He believes the club need to be selective with whoever comes through the door.

“So I think there’s still a lot of work there to be done, but I think it’s really important that the players they do bring in, they get it right and they get the right players in.”

United have already made progress this summer, but Rooney clearly doesn’t think the rebuild is finished.

With Champions League football back on the schedule, squad depth will become even more important. The question now is whether United agree with their all-time leading goalscorer and make those final additions before the deadline.
