Few Premier League comebacks can match Manchester United’s extraordinary 5-3 victory at White Hart Lane on 29 September 2001. Tottenham raced into a 3-0 half-time lead through Dean Richards, Les Ferdinand and Christian Ziege, leaving United facing what appeared to be a heavy defeat.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side, however, produced one of the competition’s most remarkable second-half turnarounds. Andy Cole pulled one back shortly after the restart before Laurent Blanc, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Juan Sebastian Veron and David Beckham completed the comeback.

The Premier League describes Ferguson as rating it among “one of the great comebacks” of his managerial career.

2. Manchester United 5-2 Tottenham Hotspur – 2009 

United produced another remarkable comeback against Spurs at Old Trafford on 25 April 2009, overturning a two-goal half-time deficit to win 5-2. Darren Bent and Luka Modric had put Tottenham 2-0 ahead, but United transformed the match after the interval.

Ronaldo scored all three of United’s goals in a 3-2 victory, opening with a spectacular long-range strike before adding a second from close range.

Harry Kane and Harry Maguire’s own goal brought Tottenham level, but Ronaldo completed his hat-trick with a powerful late header. It was Ronaldo’s first hat-trick in the competition for 14 years, which was then the longest gap between Premier League hat-tricks.

4. Manchester United 3-0 Tottenham Hotspur – 2011 

United’s 3-0 victory at Old Trafford on 22 August 2011 was another significant meeting between the clubs. After a goalless first half, Danny Welbeck opened the scoring in the 61st minute before Anderson doubled the advantage 15 minutes later.

Wayne Rooney completed the scoring in the 87th minute, heading home Ryan Giggs’ cross. The result gave United an impressive start to the 2011/12 campaign.

5. Tottenham Hotspur 1-3 Manchester United – 2021 

United’s 3-1 victory at Tottenham on 11 April 2021 earns a place among the fixture’s notable recent encounters. Son Heung-min put Spurs ahead before United responded after half-time, with Fred equalising before Edinson Cavani put Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s side in front.

Mason Greenwood then added a third in stoppage time. The result was part of a strong run of results against Tottenham.
