# Fabrizio Romano shares latest on Martinez contract after explosive rant

**The Argentinian defender has also apologized to the United higher ups as well over his comments, as shared by Fabrizio Romano.**

Lisandro Martinez has held discussions with Jason Wilcox and [Michael Carrick](https://readmanutd.com/tag/michael-carrick/) after speaking out following United’s 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid.

Martinez had questioned whether Carrick was backed enough in the summer and suggested the club needed changes.

[Fabrizio Romano](https://readmanutd.com/tag/fabrizio-romano/) has now confirmed that United consider the matter resolved for now and expect Martinez to remain available for selection.

## **Martinez apologises to Man Utd** board

[Speaking about the situation on his YouTube channel, as quoted by Football 365](https://www.football365.com/news/man-utd-romano-stunning-future-update-fined-outburst), Romano explained why Martinez’s comments caused concern inside the club.

“He spoke very strongly after the game against Atletico Madrid, which Man Utd lost. It was a very negative moment for the Red Devils. We know that Licha was very strong in his comments. He said that Michael Carrick was not backed enough during the summer transfer window.”

Romano added that Martinez had spoken directly to those at the club after the incident.

“Licha apologised to Man Utd as a club. He spoke to the directors, he spoke to Jason Wilcox, and he spoke to Michael Carrick, who was also involved in this conversation.”

“So, the underlying message remains the same. Lisandro is apologising for the way he expressed himself after a game during a difficult moment for Man Utd, but there was a discussion about the substance of what he said.”

## **Man Utd fine Martinez but avoid internal suspension**

Romano also revealed that United had imposed a financial penalty on the centre-back. However, the punishment does not appear to involve removing him from the squad.

“According to the information available tonight, Lisandro Martinez has been fined.”

He added that Martinez is expected to return to the squad as normal, with the fine considered sufficient punishment for the incident.

“The internal discussion also helped to resolve all the issues. For Man Utd, the case is closed.”

That should bring some immediate clarity to the situation, although questions remain about how the episode could affect Martinez’s longer-term position at Old Trafford.

## Lisandro **Martinez contract situation adds another question**

Romano also pointed towards Martinez’s contract, which expires next summer, with United holding an option to extend it.

“So, let’s see what is going to happen there. For sure, this is the kind of situation that will have an impact on the situation surrounding Lisandro, but we have to see what happens next in terms of future transfers and everything else.”
