# Michael Carrick handed lifeline ahead of Chelsea trip

**Michael Carrick has come under immense pressure as a disjointed Manchester United sit just two places above the relegation places.**

Despite the scrutiny and the news of a possible sacking, Michael Carrick has been given another chance at [Manchester United](https://readmanutd.com/tag/manchester-united/).

Michael Carrick will remain in charge of Manchester United for their [Premier League](https://readmanutd.com/tag/premier-league/) trip to Chelsea on Saturday after the club decided to give their under-pressure head coach another opportunity to turn things around.

United have gone eight games without a win in all competitions, with Sunday’s humiliating 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth leaving them 16th in the Premier League table, just one point above the relegation zone.

Carrick’s position looked increasingly uncertain after the Bournemouth loss. As a result, United chief executive [Omar Berrada](https://readmanutd.com/tag/omar-berrada/) and director of football Jason Wilcox were at Carrington on Monday to discuss the situation.

It has been [reported by Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/13604347/man-utd-boss-michael-carrick-to-remain-in-charge-vs-chelsea-and-given-chance-to-turn-situation-around) that United have considered other options internally as well to replace Micahel Carrick but for the weekend, they are sticking with Michael Carrick.

Carrick took training on Tuesday and the decision means he has at least one more match to convince the club’s hierarchy that he can get United back on track.

## **Gary Neville surprised by Michael Carrick decision**

[Gary Neville](https://readmanutd.com/tag/gary-neville/) admitted he was surprised that Carrick had survived the immediate threat of losing his job, although he welcomed the decision.

“I am surprised, but I am happy because I was absolutely certain that what I witnessed on Sunday would be the end of Michael,” Neville said in Sky Sports.

The former United captain explained that Carrick’s actions after the Bournemouth defeat had made him think the manager was preparing to say goodbye to the supporters.

“It looked like he was walking round at the end on his own with the players behind him, like it was almost a goodbye lap,” Neville added.

Fans continued singing the manager’s name after the final whistle, while the rest of the team drew boos.

Despite his surprise, Gary Neville hopes Micahel Carrick can use the extra time to get a response from his squad.

“I hope he can somehow get those players to start playing for him again because they haven’t played for him in the last few weeks,” he said.

The trip to Chelsea now becomes a crucial test for Micahel Carrick but United need a result and a far better performance to ease the pressure at Old Trafford.
