West Ham United close in on Darren Fletcher

West Ham United close in on Darren Fletcher

West Ham are confident of sealing a permanent deal for Darren Fletcher, according to the Mirror. The East London club believe a three-year deal is complete and the Scotsman should put pen to paper on Monday.

Fletcher, 30, also attracted interest from Valencia and West Brom, but it is West Ham’s promise of play time and lucrative offer than convinced the United midfielder. Fletcher has been with United throughout his career, joining their youth ranks at age 11 before promotion to the first team in 2000; Fletcher managed 342 games with the club, winning 5 Premier Leagues, 1 FA Cup, 2 League Cups, 4 Community Shields, 1 Champions League, and 1 FIFA Club World Cup.

However, Fletcher has only managed four starts under Louis van Gaal this season, and it is clear that, despite his recovery from ulcerative colitis, the midfielder isn’t up to the calibre of players that the Dutchman wants. West Ham believe that his experience could be the difference in breaking into the top 4 and remaining there in May.

West Ham have already made space on their wage bill for Fletcher, who is already on approx. 70k a week, by agreeing to mutually terminate the contract of Ricardo Vaz Te.

The Telegraph reported yesterday that Fletcher could move for less than the original asking price of £1.5m and whatever the price, United fans will be grateful and appreciative for service that Fletcher, a United youth product, has given.
