The curious case of David De Gea

The curious case of David de Gea is one that is causing Manchester United fan’s serious concern at the moment. What started out at outright confidence, gradually turned into stubborn denial and has collapsed into full scale panic as to where the Spanish keeper’s future lies. Every media outlet claims to have a unique insight into to the situation, however, fans will be slightly pleased to know that most expect him to sign a new deal at the club. The Mirror says that he will become the joint highest paid goalkeeper in the league, on par with City’s Joe Hart, the figure being reported is £140,000 a week, surely a fair amount for his shot-stopping heroics and consistent performances for the past few season, performances which have seen him earn him earn countless man of the match awards this campaign. That is, if he signs it, The Mirror fail to predict whether he’ll agree to it, merely reporting what’s apparently on the table.

The Telegraph’s article on the issue though, shows why fans and onlookers are truly in the dark over the whole saga, as they believe that United have a serious fight on their hands trying to convince de Gea to extend his current deal, and that Real’s interest is, well… real. With his girlfriend being based in Madrid and the city being his place of origin, there is a significant lure for the 24 year old to go to the Champions League holders. Mark Odgen does also say though that van Gaal and senior figures at the club are relaxed over the whole situation and that de Gea is happy and enjoying life in England.

It could well be the case that he has already signed a new deal and that the club are waiting on the right time to make an announcement. This theory is supported Italian media outlet Sportmediaset, the only place reporting affirmative claims of a yes or no from de Gea, saying that he’s agreed to a 5 year deal, albeit still unconfirmed by anyone at the club. One does wonder though how an Italian outlet would have accessto information on an English club, with a Spanish player and Portuguese agent, very strange although hopefully it is true. This would be more than welcome news if true, and I guess we’ll find out sooner or later as to what’s actually happening.

Whatever happens with regards to de Gea’s contract, the reliable Miguel Delaney of ESPN sums up the future of the player best : “His long-term future is in Spain, and people are going to have to get used to that.” Although it’s not great to hear, don’t be surprised to see him leave in a few years down the line, and United will have to meet their minimum aim of Champions League qualification this season or de Gea’s long-term plan could come around very shortly. Although if he’d be willing to stay at Old Trafford until his career’s end, there’d be no one complaining, bar opposition forwards.
