Manchester United are left worrying this evening about the future of Spanish superstar goalkeeper David De Gea after news broke that the player and his agent are adamant that a modest buy-out clause be inserted into any new contract that United offer.
De Gea, flanked by ever present “super agent” Jorge Mendes, is demanding that United lower the buy-out fee after interest from reigning European champions, Real Madrid. The buyout fee United want is believed to be north of £45 million and that is something Mendes is looking to reduce, as it appears more obvious that a move back home to Madrid seems more likely as the season progresses.
This will come a huge blow to United fans who have watched De Gea blossom into the world star he has become. The Spaniard has been United’s best performer this season saving the club in big games repeatedly. It can also be argued that De Gea is the reason that United are as high in the league as they currently are.
I, for one, am hoping that United show some negotiation muscle and are not held to ransom. De Gea has quickly become a huge fan favorite and is capable of becoming the world’s best goalkeeper, if he continues his rich vein of form. It is sure to be an interesting summer for United and keeping De Gea would send a huge statement of intent that Manchester United are a force in the transfer market and are capable of holding on to our biggest stars.
