After an unconvincing overall performance from Manchester United against Sunderland at home the road ahead is a “litmus test” for LVG and for his team. In theory, their top 4 position shall be sealed if over the next 6 matches they manage to secure 15 points overall.
Let us now look at the upcoming fixtures for Manchester United:
United next travel to Saint James Park where they face the rejuvenated Newcastle, who have started finding their feet and have proved to be a dominant team at home. Manchester United’s impressive away performance this season will be put to test.
The Reds then face Tottenham at home, who are at the moment in their hot streak with the likes of Harry Kane and Chrisian Eriksen going through a Purple Patch. The only thing that can assure the fans is that they shall be playing at home.
Matchday 30 will take United to Anfield, where old rivalries will re-ignite and the two juggernauts of the current league go head to head, which will probably secure either of them a secured top 4 spot, heading into the final leg of the season.
Compared to the other fixtures coming up, this next fixture should be a real 3 pointer for LVG and his team as they entertain Aston Villa at home, where even the skilled Tim Sherwood has yet not been able to turn things around for them.
The Manchester Derby is what follows, where LVG would definitely want to make a mark on the fixture and Chris Smalling might even want to make up for the Red Card that dearly cost the team during the reverse fixture in the first half of the season.
The last of the next 6 crucial fixtures is the trip to Stamford Bridge where the “Old Guru vs the Chosen One” will clash once again with each other, where Manchester United will look towards stopping Chelsea in their quest for the Championship.
Going by the recent performances of Manchester United where it has been ironic to say that, when we have played well we have come out on the wrong end of the result (Swansea) and on the other hand, when we have played “poorly” or “average”(Arsenal at the Emirates and Southampton at St Mary’s) we have secured the 3 points, what LVG and the rest of the boys need to do is buckle up and bring back the aggressive play that Manchester United players are truly known for as rightly pointed by Andy Townsend in a recent TV Show.
