Robin van Persie returns to training

Manchester United supporters have been boosted by the news that Robin van Persie is approaching a return to action, having joined up with the first-team for training.

The Dutchman has been unavailable since sustaining an ankle injury against Swansea City, last featuring on 21 February. However, having started to work alongside Louis van Gaal once again, his return looks imminent – which some believing he may even be fit for Sunday’s derby.

When asked last Friday if the striker was eligible for a return, van Gaal commented: “We have a process for injured players in the medical department. They then go to a football coach for tests and then to me. Robin still isn’t with the football coach. He’s still not in my group.”

Training with the club on Wednesday will have been an encouraging step forward for van Persie’s bid to return to the first team, but it is unlikely the 31-year-old will return this weekend, with Wayne Rooney in fine form and expecting to lead the line once again.

As a result of the injury, van Persie has netted just twice in 2015 – opening his annual campaign on 31 January in 3-1 victory over Leicester City, before adding his second in his penultimate clash, helping secure another 3-1 success at Old Trafford, this time at the hands of Burnley.

There will be no further update on his injury until van Gaal’s press conference ahead of the clash with Manchester City on Friday afternoon.

Robin van Persie has currently scored 10 goals in 24 league appearances, while also featuring in the FA Cup twice.
