Manchester United’s rumoured transfer target Dani Alves has grinded to a halt in discussions with Barcelona over a new contract, his agent has confirmed.
The 31-year-old has been hotly-tipped for a switch to Old Trafford in the summer – with the Brazilian potentially available on a free transfer, and it seems he is set for his future to be away from the Nou Camp now.
Having entered the final new months of his contract, the Brazilian was believed to be looking for a new three-year deal from the Catalan giants, but was only offered a contract extension split into annual rolling deals.
Dinorah Santana – who is also the player’s ex-wife – confirmed two other clubs have offered contracts to the right-back, who opted to reject the deal from the La Liga side. Reports in recent weeks suggested a deal had been secured with Paris Saint-Germain, but both Alves and Santana have since denied the claims.
Speaking about his player’s future, the agent said: “There’s no renewal deal with Barca. They offered a one year rolling. We have another offer, for three seasons plus sign-on bonus. We don’t accept one plus one based on 60% of games played in previous season but if Barca offer three years, Dani will stay.
“Barca said this was their final offer. If so, negotiations have ended. Dani is sad, he expected more. We don’t have an offer from Paris Saint-Germain. The offers we have are from two other clubs.”
If the comments made from Santana are correct, Barcelona will be unavailable to sign a replacement until January 2016 as a result of their transfer ban, but many believe the potential Red Devil has suffered a downturn in form in recent seasons – once tipped as one of the world’s greatest right-backs in the world.
Nevertheless, Alves would undoubtedly bring a wealth of experience to the team, and with Antonio Valencia, Rafael Da Silva and Paddy McNair all struggling to impress van Gaal enough for a first-team place, Alves could become a viable option.
The Dutchman previously bought in former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes, who has also provided experience after becoming a free transfer and playing back-up to David De Gea. However, the defender is expected to demand a hefty wage, and many supporters feel put off by the potential excess demands.
Dani Alves has made 34 appearances in all competitions for Barcelona this season.
