Manchester United are in pole position to enter discussions with Burnley forward Danny Ings, reported to have overcome interest from Liverpool over a potential deal.
Initial reports suggested Brendan Rodgers’ were preparing to exploit a loophole in the Premier League, which would see them secure a guaranteed transfer in the summer, as his current deal draws to a close.
Nevertheless, Louis van Gaal is also believed to be attempting the same method to lure the Englishman to the Theatre of Dreams, which could see the 22-year-old replace the likes of Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao, while lining up against fellow countryman Wayne Rooney.
Ings has currently found the net nine times in his first season in the top flight, as many consider the striker to be a future England international. Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane has rapidly climbed to success at White Hart Lane, and earning his international debut this season, is expected to be followed by Ings soon.
Van Gaal was reportedly impressed by Ings during his trip to Old Trafford in February, scoring his side’s only goal in a 3-1 defeat to the Red Devils. As a result, he has now become one of the hottest prospects in Europe, and United are believed to be keen to secure a new deal quickly.
Ings is currently set to be out of contract in the summer, and as a result of his age, Burnley would receive just £5 million compensation should he complete a transfer to a fellow Premier League side. Under certain rules, an English team can agree a fee and sign a pre-contract with Ings, guaranteeing him a summer move.
Real Socieded, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur have all been linked to the forward.
