Red Devils in pole position to sign Memphis Depay

Manchester United are expected to beat Premier League rivals Liverpool to the signature of PSV wideman Memphis Depay, reports suggest.

The Merseyside outfit have been linked to the Dutchman for some time, but the Red Devils – led by former Netherlands national team manager Louis van Gaal – are expected to hijack a deal for the 21-year-old.

And according to The Telegraph, van Gaal is now confident of completing the transfer, courtesy of United’s almost confirmed involvement in the Champions League next season. The 63-year-old was able to persuade Depay to stay in the Eredivisie for another season last year, and the left winger is expected to leave in the coming months.

Manchester United have been linked to the star ever since van Gaal’s reign with the Dutch national team came to a close, following an impressive tournament for both the Netherlands and Depay – a time in which current United stars Daley Blind and Robin van Persie shone.

Depay has also been linked to a switch away by Dutch outlet De Telegraaf, who previously reported the Manchester club have the edge over other clubs in the signing, due to the manager’s good relationship with the star. Predominantly featuring on the left, Depay can also be deployed as a main striker if required, an area in which the Reds have struggled this season.

Memphis Depay has scored 19 goals in 26 league games this season, while netting an additional three in six Europa League fixtures.

It is expected a deal to complete the transfer would cost an estimated £20 million.
