Louis van Gaal wants David de Gea to stay

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has suggested he is determined to see Spanish international David de Gea pen a long-term deal with the club this summer.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference on Friday, a number of journalists posed questions regarding the future of the number one shot stopper – who is firmly linked to a switch to Real Madrid in the upcoming transfer window.

Nonetheless, van Gaal hopes a deal can be agreed. When asked about contract negotiations, he responded: “It takes a long time now. It can always happen – I am not the boss. I want him to stay, but I’ve explained that the player is the boss – he can say yes or no.

“You have to ask David de Gea, not me,” he added. “He has to sign; we have offered him a lot of money.”

De Gea is a concrete favourite to be named as the club’s Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year, while also a nominee for the PFA Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards. The 24-year-old has featured in every minute of Manchester United’s competitive season this year, and his form is ensuring second choice keeper Victor Valdes doesn’t stand a look-in, despite his experience.

If the Spaniard is to depart the club, a return to Madrid looks likely. Having enjoyed a spell with Atletico Madrid, prior to his switch to the Theatre of Dreams, he may head off to Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid. Despite Ancelotti stating he had no interest in the goalkeeper, with Iker Casillas remaining at first choice, a number of media outlets remain to link the two in a summer move.

David de Gea has made 39 appearances in all competitions this season.
