Everton 3-0 Manchester United: Four things we learned

Everton 3-0 Manchester United: Four things we learned

A right back is needed

Louis van Gaal will surely look to add a right back to the squad in the summer. While Antonio Valencia has performed admirably and solidly playing the right back role all season, he is not a RB by nature and this became more evident in today’s game as arguably all the goals were errors from Valencia. A top class experienced player like Dani Alves would be an ideal candidate.

Carrick is vital to United

This is something that anybody associated with United does not already know, but Michael Carrick’s importance to the team was once again demonstrated by his absence on Sunday. Carrick controls a game and is deceptively brilliant at nullifying the offense of the opponent and I can’t help but think that he would have helped enormously today against Everton’s counter attack, where United looked very suspect, case in point being the first goal. Without Carrick this season United have been poor and results have shown this, whereas with him they have prospered as was the case in March and early April.

Poor final product costly

United went into half time trailing by 2 goals. This was a harsh reality considering United had dominated possession and got into some decent goal scoring positions. This was their downfall in the first half as Marouane Fellaini, Daley Blind, Chris Smalling and Ashley Young wasted their chances with lacklustre strikes. United have gone back to back away games with no goals and this helps explains their poor away form this season. United needed to be more clinical.

Injury concern for Rooney

The scene of Wayne Rooney limping off the near the end of the game will be of a real concern to all United fans and especially van Gaal. No official word has been giving on the severity of the injury yet but United can ill afford to lose their captain. Radamel Falcao’s troubles continue and with Robin van Persie’s best days seemingly behind him, van Gaal may have to think of bringing in some quality depth to the striking position during the transfer window.
