According to reports in Portugal, Manchester United are close to sealing a deal for 15-year-old Benfica goalkeeper Joao Virginia.
The young shot stopper spent time on trial at United last summer alongside teammate Joao Filipe and is said to have impressed youth coaches at the club. Benfica have been unable to tie him down on a long-term contract because he is not yet 16, making it easier for other clubs to come in for him.
Portuguese newspaper O Jogo claim that the development of Virginia over the summer and then throughout this season, where the teenager has been first choice for Benfica’s youth setup, have convinced United to invest.
The paper also claims that we should know about the transfer within the next week, with the player now waiting for confirmation from United that the move has been completed.
United have had scouts at Benfica’s first-team games all season but have also this season had a presence at youth team games as they expand their scouting network looking for exciting new talents to add to an already impressive academy.
