Crystal Palace 1-2 Manchester United: Four things we learned

Crystal Palace 1-2 Manchester United: Four things we learned

1. Smalling is a first choice defender

Chris Smalling has made an immense improvement since in the Manchester derby. The central defender appears to be begging to fill the gaping hole left in our defence from the departure of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, and while Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones prove stern competition, Smalling’s performances are constantly on the up.

2. We’re still a long way off challenging for the title

In my opinion I think we played poorly, despite picking up the three points. While the points are what would lead us to a title challenge, we need a number of signings before we start to challenge the likes of Chelsea for the title. We need more time to develop and truly completely understand the philosophy of Louis van Gaal.

3. David de Gea, what hasn’t been said?

David de Gea is pivotal to the Manchester United set-up, and I believe our top four threat would be lacking without the Spaniard’s services. I’m yet to decide where I believe he will be featuring come the close of the transfer window, but the attraction that the Los Blancos have could be enough to get him. I hope he stays, because he is our best player bar none.

4. Ashley Young is good, but only good

While he created both of our goals on Sunday, I feel he wastes a lot of crosses – and his decision making when he gets the to the by-line is quite poor. Take Falcao for an example, the Colombian was shouting for the ball in the six-yard box for an easy tap-in, but opted to for pass behind to Juan Mata, which ended in the stands. He is undoubtedly in good form, but I believe we have better players in Angel Di Maria and Adnan Januzaj, as well as new arrival Memphis Depay.
