Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini believes his side have merited their battle for the top four, and believes his side deserve to feature in the Champions League next season.
The Belgian midfielder netted the winning goal against Crystal Palace in a 2-1 victory on Saturday, and looks to have secured their place in the top four as Brendan Rodger’s Liverpool trail by six points with just two games remaining.
The Red Devils will now need to lose against both Arsenal and Hull City, while Liverpool take maximum points in the run-in with a considerable number of goals, to knock Louis van Gaal’s men from their European perch.
And despite their regular criticism throughout the season, Fellaini feels his side had worked hard and earned their reward in van Gaal’s first season in charge.
“It was a massive win,” he said. “All the players, the manager and the staff are very happy. I think we do [deserve a place in the top four], but we will see if we get it after the Chelsea-Liverpool game.”
Fellaini was branded a ‘flop’ under the management of David Moyes following his big-money transfer from Everton, but has since silenced his critics under the reign of van Gaal. The towering midfielder has been pivotal to the Old Trafford set-up this season, and has proved his transfer fee with spells in the middle and as a forward.
And as just a single point confirms their place in the top four, the 27-year-old added: “The group is experienced and the spirit is unbelievable, so we have to keep going,” he added. “We showed today that the spirit is there today, so it is good for the future.”
Marouane Fellaini has scored six goals in 25 league appearances this season.[liveblog]
