Manchester United’s latest recruit Memphis Depay has admitted that he went ‘crazy’ when PSV confirmed they had agreed a deal for the winger to join the Red Devils.
The 21-year-old commented on his delight at securing a dream move to be reunited with former Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal – after the two enjoyed a successful World Cup campaign together.
United recently announced a deal had been agreed with the Dutch outfit, and Depay’s transfer would go through as soon as the transfer window opened, subject to a medical. The youngster is expected to miss the last day of the season to complete the medical, with the deal expected to cost between £25-30 million.
“I went crazy when I was told Manchester United and PSV had reached an agreement,” said Depay. “I will have to prove myself again at Manchester United. It’s a dream, a new challenge and a new step.
“I was really close to a transfer to Paris Saint-Germain. I knew United were always interested but nothing was concrete.
“In the last moment, United called my manager at PSV. After I spoke with van Gaal, I told myself ‘I want to go there’. I’m really proud and I believe I can be a big player at United.”
Memphis Depay has scored 22 goals in 29 league appearances for the Eredivisie champions this season.
