Under-15s to feature in Marveld 2015 tournament

Manchester United Under-15s have been confirmed to compete in the 26th international Marveld Tournament from May 29 to May 31 in the Netherlands.

The Red Devils will join eleven teams from across the globe, ranging from Barcelona to S.V. Grol. United will kick off their campaign on the opening day against Feyenoord at 17:30. They will then face another Dutch club at 19:30 in the form of PSV – the senior club of recent signing Memphis Depay.

The second day will see the youngsters feature in three games. They will commence their day at 10:30 against Atletico Paranaense, before playing French giants Paris Saint-Germain at 13:30, and conclude the day against Right to Dream Ghana at 15:30.

Ajax, Dynamo Moscow, Arsenal and FC Twente will also feature in the tournament, but could only face the prospect of Manchester United should they qualify from their respective groups. All teams will progress into the knockout stages regardless of their league finish, but must finish in the top two to make the semi-finals.

Should United reach the final, they will play at 15:45 on May 31. Names including Danny Rose of Oxford United, Tom Cleverley of Aston Villa and Danny Welbeck of Arsenal all previously represented the Red Devils at the competition.

Having entered the competition thirteen times, they are yet to clinch the title. However, the Reds came agonisingly close in 2012, losing in the final to German outfit Bayer Leverkusen. The tournament was most recently won by Ajax, which saw United finish in a disappointing 11th place.

Nonetheless, they claimed the Fair Play Cup in 2013 and 2014, just a year after losing to PSV, Real Madrid, Atletico Paranaense and drawing with FC Twente in the group stage. They then lost 5-1 to Fluminense in the cross-finals, before sealing 11th place on penalties after a goalless encounter.

The tournament has seen a number of players rise to prominence after being named as the Player of the Tournament. Manchester City prodigy Jose Angel Pozo claimed the award in 2011 with Real Madrid, while Barcelona duo Iago Falque and Jordi Alba were named best players in 2005 and 2004 respectively.

Manchester United’s Dean Henderson was named as the Best Goalkeeper during the 2012 outing, an award claimed by Tim Wiese in 1996. Furthermore, Nicky Ajose was named as Top Scorer when representing United in 2006. Romelu Lukaku, Danny Mills, Stevan Jovetic and Zakaria Labyad all previously scooped the goalscoring award.

Current United first-team players Robin van Persie, Daley Blind and Depay all featured in the competition.
