Robin van Persie joined Manchester United from Arsenal for a fee of £24 million, and his first season at Manchester United became a fantasy for both the Dutchman and supporters.
It didn’t take the striker long to become a fan favourite, following the fantastic season he had recently enjoyed with Arsene Wenger. The 31-year-old, a product of the Feyenoord youth system, guided the Red Devils to their 20th league title in his first season – scoring a remarkable 26 goals in the Premier League.
His form under David Moyes began to dip and injuries began to haunt him again. This season has also seen the Flying Dutchman fail to impress Louis van Gaal, having spent a large period of time on the sidelines with injuries.
The recurring injuries, combined with the struggling form of Colombian forward Radamel Falcao, forced van Gaal to finally put Wayne Rooney up front once again. The results were positive immediately, and the goals were coming in thick and fast for the Reds once again, leaving van Persie with little prospect for the season.
Rooney’s striking ability has remained consistent, despite van Gaal toying with his position between midfield and the attacking trio – which has seen van Persie and Falcao feature on the bench more than both would have liked given their past prolific records and history.
It is reported that the £240,000 a week that van Persie earns are now turning into an unrequited expense, and Manchester United could do without the striker who now appears far beyond his best.
It is also believed that van Persie has rejected lucrative big money offers from various clubs, with ambitions to stay on at Old Trafford. Nonetheless, he showed signs of improvement against West Bromwich Albion in a recent 1-0 defeat at the Theatre of Dreams.
With links to Serie A and the Eredivisise, van Persie now has a decision to where his future lies.
