Warren Joyce’s Under-21s crowned Premier League winners

Manchester United have been crowned winners of the Barclays Under-21 Premier League, as manager Warren Joyce celebrates his third title in just four seasons.

With one final game to play, the date of the fixture at Manchester City is yet to be confirmed. Nonetheless, a surprise defeat for Chelsea against West Ham United on Friday evening meant the Red Devils could no longer be caught, and were named winners.

Joyce’s side were preparing to meet with the Citizens to conclude the season, having also played them in the last fixture. Meeting at Old Trafford in the week, the Reds dominated in an impressive 4-0 victory, which they will now hope to repeat to conclude the campaign in remarkable fashion.

Chelsea were required to sustain maximum points against West Ham, and would then have to hope United dropped points at City, while winning again in their final two games of the season. Despite clinching the UEFA Youth League and FA Youth Cup, the Blues failed to complete the treble with Joyce celebrating success once again.

With constant changes to the squad through loans, players promoted to the first team and injuries, Joyce has achieved a staggering record, and the progress of the Under-21 is undoubtedly expected to delight Louis van Gaal – who has promoted a number of youngsters to the first team this season.

Manchester United lost just three of 21 outings in the top division, recording 11 victories and 7 draws.
