Manchester United’s latest arrival Memphis Depay has been named as the Eredivisie’s best young player this season, after scooping the Johan Cruyff Trophy.
The 21-year-old has completed his medical ahead of a move to Old Trafford when the transfer window opens on June 9, and has capped off a phenomenal season, which saw him score 22 goals and assist a further five as PSV went on to lift the league title.
However, the winger was unable to collect his award, announced on Tuesday night, after travelling to England to complete the final stages of his deal, expected to cost in the region of £25 million. Cruyff, Zwolle manager Ron Jans, Ajax head coach Frank de Boer and former Netherlands international Wim Jonk announced Depay as the deserved winner.
“Last year he was already very close, and now he’s by far first. He’s made tremendous progress,” Cruyff commented.
After being named as the winner, Depay added: “I’m proud of the fact that I’m not only top scorer, but also talent of the year.”
As well as the trophy, Depay will now have a ‘Cruyff Court’ named after him – a development in the Netherlands which has seen football pitches developed across the country.
Teammate and rumoured United target Georgino Wijnaldum was also honoured after an impressive season, having collected the Eredivisie best player for the 2014/15 season earlier in the year.
Memphis Depay is expected to have completed a 5-year deal with the Red Devils, meaning he will once again work alongside former Netherlands international boss Louis van Gaal.
