Liverpool look to hijack United transfer duo

Fierce rivals Liverpool are set to battle it out with Manchester United over the transfers of Nathaniel Clyne and Nicolas Gaitan.

Clyne has been one of the stand out full-backs in the Premier League this season, earning himself a few England call-ups. Southampton signed Clyne back in 2012 from Crystal Palace, and the 24-year-old has improved considerably since making the switch to St Mary’s. Nevertheless, with improvement comes interest, and over the past year, Nathaniel has been linked with big money moves to Chelsea and Manchester United.

The full-back stated that he wanted to play in the Champions League and that it was ‘his dream’. However, Clyne has hinted that he may want to stay and extend his contract with Southampton. The English defender did not expect Ronald Koeman to have the impact he did and he may want to stay at the club.

Liverpool are now looking to bolster their defence by adding Clyne to their side. It is said that Rodgers has been a huge admirer of Clyne for a while now and would love to add him to his side, claim the Mirror. Glen Johnson will leave Liverpool at the end of the season which would leave a huge gap at the full-back position. Furthermore, United will hope to put the ‘Champions League’ card into play to help lure him away from a move to Anfield.

Liverpool are also hoping to snatch a Gaitan deal right from under the nose of Manchester United. Gaitan has been linked with a move away from Portugal with Manchester looking the likely destination. However, Rodgers would like to improve his attack for next season.

The Mirror state that the Red Devils have been following Gaitan for over a year now but have failed to make a move because of his high buy out clause. Rodgers will be limited with his spending this summer and may find it challenging to bring in both players before the start of the new season.

Gaitan has a buy out clause of £25 million which could leave a massive dent in Liverpool’s budget.
