Nathaniel Clyne hints at Southampton stay

Manchester United’s chances of signing Nathaniel Clyne have taken a huge hit, with the right-back indicating that he will sign a new contract at Southampton.

United are scouring the market for a right-back this summer, and England international Clyne, whose contract runs out next summer, is one of the main targets on Louis van Gaal’s hit list, alongside Barcelona’s Dani Alves and Everton’s Seamus Coleman.

However, since Clyne switched agents this month, the Saints have become increasingly confident in retaining the services of the 24-year old.

Speaking to Sky Sports News ahead of England’s games against the Republic of Ireland and Slovenia next month, Clyne appeared unfazed when asked if his first-team status at international level would be affected by his club career.

He said: “As long as you’re playing well for your club and you’re doing ever so well in the Premier League then, yeah, you’ll get a chance, regardless of whether you’re in a top team or not. But Southampton’s pushing up, so why can’t we be a top team?”

The Saints appeared to be getting irritated with Clyne over his refusal to sign a new contract and Clyne said last month that he was ambitious and determined to play in the Champions League in the near future.

However, if these latest comments are anything to go by, it looks as if Clyne is edging closer to signing a new contract at St Mary’s, and van Gaal will have to look for other options at right-back.
