Which United star could hold the key to summer transfers?

Manchester United have plenty of transfer business to be keeping on top of this summer, with Louis van Gaal declaring he already knows he wants to bring in and who he will sell. He is reported to have a £150 million ‘warchest’ with which to execute his transfer strategy.

Suggested targets include heavily-priced players such as Nicolas Otamendi, Gareth Bale and Ilkay Gundogan. It is possible that Louis van Gaal will look to decrease the monetary asking price for such players by offering one of his own players as part of the deal… but whom?

Javier Hernandez has spent the season on-loan at Real Madrid – he was sent there to make way for United’s own loan-signing of Radamel Falcao. Since the end of the Premier League season, it has been confirmed by United that Falcao will not be signing a permanent deal at Old Trafford, possibly meaning a return is on the cards for Little Pea.

However, the Mexican international is said to be seeking first-team football, which is something Louis van Gaal’s ‘philosophy’ probably won’t allow, given his desire to play Wayne Rooney as a lone striker. With Hernandez’s agent seemingly also having a large portion of choice in the hitman’s future, it is looking almost certain that Hernandez will be leaving Manchester for good this summer.

This makes him a useful resource. He endured a difficult start to the 2014-15 La Liga season, not getting many opportunities at the Bernabeu, however in this latter portion of the season he has been helped by an injury to fellow Madrid striker Karim Benzema. Through the Frenchman’s absence, Hernandez was able to make his way into Madrid’s starting eleven, and score goals. He finished his loan spell having scored in five of his final 11 appearances, which included the goal to knock rivals Atletico Madrid out in the quarter finals of the UEFA Champions League.

His improved form towards the end of the campaign could be key as United push for targets to make them serious title contenders in 2015-16. Whilst he couldn’t be used in a deal for Gareth Bale or Dani Carvajal (Real Madrid refused on their option-to-buy, so won’t be interested in him), he could be included in deals for Nicolas Otamendi of Valencia or even Nathaniel Clyne of Southampton, who are said to be an interested party.

Other reported transfer targets for United are Geoffrey Kondogbia (Monaco), Kevin Strootman (Roma) and Dani Alves (Barcelona).

Valued at around £10-12 million at the moment, any deal including ‘Chicharito’ could save United a lot of money, and give the Mexican a chance to play regular football without leaving Europe’s top tiers.
