Ilkay Gundogan’s move to Manchester United is gaining pace, as BILD reported that another club wanting his signature pulled out of the race due to financial disagreements and a split camp.
It is well known that whatever young, German talent there is in the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich want and it was reported last week by Bild and other outlets that they are in pole position to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Gundogan for £25 million and Pierre Højbjerg in exchange.
However, Bild now reports that talks have fallen apart between the player and the club for a number of reasons. First of those, is that the Gundogan family asked for too much money which the club wasn’t necessarily willing to pay.
The other issue is that they claim thoughts on Gundogan in the Bayern camp were divided and not everyone wanted him – including manager Pep Guardiola. It is unclear how if Guardiola didn’t want the player talks went to an advanced stage, throwing doubt into the accuracy of the rumours.
The article claims that Gundogan’s poor performance in the DFB-Pokal final last Saturday was the nail in the coffin which turned the club off of purchasing him.
BILD also mentioned Barcelona who are also interested in the player, but say that the transfer ban on the Catalan club would make things difficult, as Gundogan wants to leave this summer and Dortmund do not want to lose another player on a free transfer.
This then leaves the door wide open for Manchester United. Der Westen again claimed last weekend that the Manchester club remained the club the player was always most likely to join and the fundamental terms had been agreed.
