United are playing four matches in 2015 pre-season tour, which is to start in mid-July and finish two weeks later. South-American players who feature at this year’s Copa America and most new signings will be doubtful for the friendlies against Club America, San Jose Earthquakes, Barcelona and PSG. As a result, we have chosen five Under-21 players who could get the spot on a plane to the United States for the first time in their careers.
Paddy McNair
The 20-year old centre-back managed to collect 18 senior appearances last season, getting his chance to play after set of injuries to United’s back line. The Northern Irishman enjoys Louis van Gaal’s confidence, which can be seen from his recently signed contract – keeping him at the Theatre of Dreams until 2017. With only Chris Smalling and Phil Jones certain to travel to the States, McNair is a logical option to fill the number.
Saidy Janko
A Swiss right-back, Janko had a notable loan-spell at Bolton last season and will want to prove his abilities on ‘Tour 2015’. Antonio Valencia’s injury, which has had to be operated on, and Rafael’s mysterious case indicate that 19-year-old will be in contention to feature as a full-back option. His versatility and formation adaptability is another reason for van Gaal to pick Janko, who is still waiting for his senior United debut despite branded one of the club’s hottest prospects.
James Wilson
As things stand, Wilson is a guarantee to both travel and play for United on pre-season tour. A severe shortage of attacking options leaves Wayne Rooney as the only definite choice, which implies Wilson doesn’t have to fear not getting an opportunity. Van Gaal gave 18 appearances to young English gem throughout last season but his contract situation remains unclear, so it is expected that the Dutchman will want to see the 19-year-old in action again before making a decision about his potential loan.
Andreas Pereira
United’s Under-21 Player of the Season, and the one who carries the most of fans’ expectations, is very likely to be rewarded with a place on the tour. The versatile attacking midfielder signed a three-year-contract a month ago, which ended all the speculations about his future. And currently featured at the Under-20 World Cup representing Brazil, Pereira managed to get an assist and a goal in his team’s 2-1 victory against Hungary yesterday. He’ll want to maintain his progress into next season and ensure he can be a vital player in new era at United.
Ben Pearson
The young English international enjoyed a brilliant time at League One outfit Barnsley on his six-month loan, and imposed himself as first choice midfielder. Vital playing time and the experience he collected from the senior game has undoubtedly caught the eye of the United staff, and it feels like it’s ‘now or never’ for the 20-year-old. Having been compared to United legend Roy Keane on a regular basis, Pearson is the obvious pick to get a chance to play as part of a midfield trio, and could potentially be the long-term solution United are desperate for.
