According to Manchester Evening News, Karim Benzema’s agent met with Manchester United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, which has led to speculation about a potential move to Manchester for the Frenchman.
Woodward was spotted in The Savoy Hotel in London with Karim Djaziri on Wednesday evening, leading to rumours that the Red Devils could be planning a £40 million swoop for the current Real Madrid striker, who has been linked to a departure from the Santiago Bernabeu for some time.
Last season, Wayne Rooney was United’s lowest top scorer, since 1982 – when Frank Stapleton claimed the unwanted honour. With Radamel Falcao’s loan not being extended, and Robin van Persie’s future in doubt, with recent reports suggesting a move to Turkey could be on the cards, Louis van Gaal’s only other striker that is recognised is James Wilson, the 19-year-old who has recently broke into the first team set-up.
However, with Wilson tipped for a loan spell away, with moves in the Premier League and Championship believed to be available to the youngster, Louis van Gaal’s £150 million transfer budget could contribute to adding the ’20-goals-a-season’ striker that the Dutchman desires.
Sir Alex Ferguson was once interested in Benzema, during his Lyon days. In fact, the ex-Boss gave the French international a Manchester United shirt when the two sides met in 2008, in a 1-1 draw.
The following year, Benzema joined Madrid in a deal worth £35 million, with United signing England’s very own, Michael Owen.
