Manchester United are set to reject any enquiries over the availability of Victor Valdes. The 33-year-old goalkeeper is rumoured to be attracting interest from Valencia.
United’s keen interest in retaining Valdes will only bring further doubt to the already uncertain future of his compatriot, David de Gea. Whilst it is unclear if Louis van Gaal sees Valdes as a potential successor to de Gea, should he be tempted away to Real Madrid, the veteran goalkeeper is certainly seen as a vital member of the first team squad. His experience in Europe, where he won three Champions League titles with Barcelona, will be crucial as United look to find their footing in the competition following a season’s absence.
The Spanish international signed an 18 month contract at Old Trafford in January having trained with the club since October of the previous year. He has had to be patient but finally got his chance in the first team in May, replacing the injured de Gea during the 1-1 draw with Arsenal. A week later, in the final match of the season, he made his first start for the club and kept a clean sheet in the goalless draw with Hull City.
Whatever happens with de Gea, Victor Valdes looks set to become an important part of Manchester United’s squad in the coming season.
