Premier League clubs have submitted the list of players that they’ve kept under contract for the upcoming season, as well as the ones they’ll be releasing, who will be allowed to leave on free transfers. Manchester United have confirmed the departures of Ryan McConnell, Callum Evans, Tom Thorpe, Ben Amos and Tom Cleverley.
Cleverley’s departure comes as no surprise to anyone as the England international has signed a five-year contract with Everton. The midfielder, who spent last term on loan at Aston Villa, will join up with Roberto Martinez and the rest of the team on the 1st July when his United deal expires.
Amos, a former England Under-21 international knew his time at United was coming to an end with the arrival of Victor Valdes in January. Amos was aware that his chances of first team action were very limited and went on his sixth loan spell, this time at Bolton Wanderers for a three month period this season. The keeper, who only made seven first team United appearances over seven years as a professional, is set to return to Bolton on a permanent basis.
Perhaps the biggest surprise out of the five released players comes through Thorpe, who captained the Under 21’s during their league title success this season. The centre-back made his first team debut at Old Trafford in 2014 after coming on as a substitute during injury-time against West Ham. The Englishman has admitted that he needs first team football to continue his development, which will be one of the main factors when deciding on his new club.
19 year-old defenders McConnell and Evans have also been released and are on the search for a new club after gaining experience in Warren Joyce’s Under 21 team this season.
